Castaway on the Moon (김씨 표류기) [2009]

I just finished watching this movie and it is beautiful.  It is about a man (played by Jung Jae-Young [정재영]) who tried to commit suicide via jumping off a bridge.  Instead, the man survives the jump and washes ashore on a deserted island in the middle of the Han River.  The irony is that the man got stranded on an island located in the middle of a huge capital city: Seoul.  Castaway from the modern world, in the middle of a modern city, the man decides to live in this inhabitant island called Bamseom (밤섬).

Meanwhile, the man gets spotted by a lady (played by Jung Ryeo Won [정려원] – who is a great actress in my humble opinion) via a telescope.  This lady suffers from agoraphobia, making her a castaway from modern reality.  In a surprising move, she decides to send the man a message.

This movie isn’t a fast-paced thriller.  Instead it is a casual movie with heart warming scenes.  There are a few gross moments, for example, drinking from the Han River – Yuck (anything involving swimming/drinking from the Han River will make me want to vomit).  There are some funny moments, such as the golf scene and the attempt to light a fire.  Both actors, in my opinion, did an incredible job; I was really rooting for them both.  It felt like I was watching the lives of two people, who had been betrayed/suffered by society, come slowly together.

Great movie and I strongly recommend it.  I would rate it a 9.5 out of 10 (gross moment made me cringe).
